 Notes & Reviews
After several years as a touring folksinger, Brian Laidlaw settled in Minneapolis to earn an MFA in poetry at the University of Minnesota. He wrote wolf wolf wolf as an audio counterpart to his masters' thesis, and teamed up with producer Brett Bullion to record the song suite. Guided by the earthy authenticity of Neil Young's Harvest, Laidlaw and his band recorded everything live, together in one room - tracking the entire album in three days. The resulting disc has the trademark atmosphere and richness that Bullion has created for acts like The Farewell Circuit, Hildur Victoria, and Haley Bonar. Meanwhile, Laidlaw's songwriting takes cues from Americana wordsmiths like Gillian Welch and Josh Ritter, and iconic poet-songwriters like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. Upon finishing his MFA last spring, Laidlaw joined the faculty at McNally Smith College of Music to teach songwriting and composition. He is also a founding member of a Twin Cities arts cohort called the Yes!Let's Collective, which includes Very Small Animal, The Dusty Porch Sisters, Oak Ribbons, Bipolar Bear, Alpenglow, and Laidlaw's own 'messy folk orchestra' The Family Trade.
