Cannonball Adderley : Cannonball's Bossa Nova

This is a rare and dear recording to the bossa nova fans, since it featured Cannonbal Adderley with the Sergio Mendes', legendary, Bossa Rio ensemble. Regrettably we can't hear much from the Bossa Rio group in this particular recording, but they went on to cut an album for Philips one year later, in Rio de Janeiro. This album had been issued under the title =The Beat of Brazil= bu recently the original master tapes were restored and released in the Philips' correct track order and album name (Sergio Mendes & Bossa Rio). Having said that, what importance remains for this previous sessions with Adderley? If we look to the evolution of the bossa nova musicians back in the late 50's/early 60's, we can identify the need to add a multitude of jazz elements to the bossa nova wave. This need is reflected in the formation of avant-garde trios, like the Tamba Trio (later Tamba 4), and in small groups, such as those from J.T. Meirelles (Copa Rio) and from Sergio Mendes and Roberto Menescal. What we hear in this CD is the presence of bossa nova musicians in New York, playing jazz in their own unique style, in front of renowned jazz musicians, and being respected by them. In other words, this is indeed an historical recording, tha cannot be missed by the collector. Overall, the recording is splendid, and I a particularly glad that the remastering job was meticulously done, so as to preserve the original, sound quality and atmosphere. Highly recommended!
