Amy Beach (1867-1944) and Arthur Foote (1853-1937) were leading American composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who, along with Edward MacDowell, John Knowles Paine, George Chadwick, and Horatio Parker, made up a group unofficially known as the 'Boston Six.' These composers were some of the first to write in the classical tradition in the US and additionally were pioneers of American music education. Beach especially distinguished herself in a male-dominated field and contributed a vast range of musical works for the American repertory.
