 Notes & Reviews

the holy barbarian coffee house in st. louis mo existed for only about 3 months. at the time the city was not ready for a racially mixed band interracial couples and outrageous beatnik poetry. the police tried repeatedly to close the club down and ultimately succeeded. this cd presents 24-year old guitarist grant green live at the holy barbarian a year prior to the first of his many highly regarded recordings for the blue note record label. organist sam lazar and his trio including tenor saxophonist bob graf are in fine form but the spotlight here is on green.
