 Notes & Reviews

Joellen Lapidus is one of the pioneers of contemporary mountain dulcimer playing, songwriting, and building. She is the author of the recently updated 2nd edition of her classic dulcimer instruction book 'LAPIDUS ON DULCIMER 2'. Joellen blends Appalachian, Indian, Arabic, jazz, classical, and pop musical styles to give the mountain dulcimer a new range of rhythmic, melodic, and tuning possibilities. As a dulcimer maker, her work influenced many of the dulcimer builders of the 70's and 80's. Her new CD 'Dulcimer Music for the Pelican Ballet' is the summation of a 46 year career of expanding the musical and design possibilities of the mountain dulcimer. Her instruments were known for their innovative shapes, exquisite sound hole and peghead inlay work. She introduced the dulcimer to Joni Mitchell and made three instruments for her between 1968 and 1976. She has also made instruments for David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Wendy Waldman and Garth Hudson. After pursuing a second career as a psychotherapist between 1984 and 2002 and completing a masters and doctorate in psychology, Joellen returned to performing, teaching and writing songs for the dulcimer in the 2000s. Her solo dulcimer CD, 'Joellen Lapidus In Concert', was recorded live in March of 2004, and marked her return to performing after a hiatus of many years. This newest CD, 'Dulcimer Music for the Pelican Ballet' demonstrates the wide variety of styles, tunings and music that can be played on the dulcimer. In 2011-2012 she began building dulcimers again as well as collaborating with other dulcimer makers who have commissioned her inlay work for their peghead and fretboard designs. 'My carving and inlay work was and is very totemic. An animal or image like The Ram, The Crying Seahorse, The Pelican, The Jester, The Buddha or The Dancing Fuscia Dulcimer captures my imagination and expresses something of intensity emerging from my life experience, my spirit, my unconscious, or from the person I am building for. I work intuitively. I am not scientific in my approach to building. I hand scrape and hand plane the wood that forms the sides, back, top and fretboard of my instruments. I listen to the wood to maximize it's aliveness, it's richness of tone and freedom to vibrate and respond. I design the instruments to convey a feeling or an idea that delivers movement, balance, power, beauty, poignancy and elegance.' Joellen teaches dulcimer in West Los Angeles at the renowned McCabes Guitar Store in Santa Monica, CA and founded the Los Angeles Mountain Urban Dulcimer Club. She has also returned to her original musical loves - the clarinet and the accordion. She performs klezmer music with her band 'Extreme Klezmer Makeover'; as well as mountain dulcimer music with her band 'The Joellen Lapidus and the Ballona Gypsies.' She is also one of the featured dulcimer artists in the full length feature film 'Hearts of the Dulcimer' by Patricia Delich and Wayne Jiang.
