 Notes & Reviews

Just toe-tapping, jam session style jazz, with good swinging from Marshall McDonald of The Count Basie Orchestra and accompanied by a top notch line-up of NYC players with special guest, the marvelous pianist from Les Paul's band and Mel Torme, John Colianni. Marshall plays tenor saxophone on this recording, and goes for a traditional sound coming out of his Pittsburgh roots. Marshall has played and recorded with Lionel Hampton, Paquito D'Rivera, appeared on two CDs with Chico O'Farrill and and has close up screen shot in the movie The Thomas Crown Affair. Marshall is influenced by the great tenor players, John Coltrane, Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins, Steve Grossman, and Illinois Jaquet. Marshall is joined by a great rhythm section, James West, a New York mainstay on piano, special guest John 'Chops' Colianni, (Lionel Hampton's favorite piano player', Count Basie veteran Bill Moring on bass, and studio recording artist James Mola on drums. This is just easy listening, nice sounding swinging jazz. Nothing avant grade here, just straight ahead, good listening music. Look for Marshall's new release next year of all original tunes, and also a bend towards his Grover Washington and David Sanborn roots on a upcoming smooth jazz outing!
