 Notes & Reviews
The Matt Kane Trio was formed in 1995. Members of the group at that time were Tom Rickard, vibraphone; Tony LaPuma, bass; Matt Kane, drums/leader. The trio released 'On Our Own' in August of 1996 and was touted as the hottest jazz group of Kansas City. This trio was the only local jazz group to be asked to perform at the legendary Grand Emporium of KC, to share billing with Joshua Redman and Charlie Hunter. In 1997 the group was featured on the Kansas City Jazz and Blues Festival, sharing billing with George Benson and Chris Botti. By mid 1997, Kane moved to NYC and Rickard moved to St. Louis and Kane continued his group on the East coast. Rickard traveled the world, relocating to Germany and later the UK before returning to St. Louis to become one of the best players on the scene. In 2014, Kane re-mastered 'On Our Own' and added previously unreleased recordings of the band, the album is now available as 'Streamliner'. Critics have said of this album: 'Cool and collected, yet energized and hungry' -KC Jam Magazine 'Group interplay is impressive, no ego or grandstanding, just fine music.' -Kansas City Star.
