Quirky indie rock / folk / pop / avant label Asthmatic Kitty's second compilation (their first was 2001's To Spirit Back the Mews ) features more oddities from Wyoming. Bogs Visionary Orchestra channels Country Joe & the Fish and Arlo Guthrie on the jovial 'Everybody's Broken,' the Castanets provide a modern-day field recording with the sparse and spooky 'First Light's Freeze,' and orchestral /indie superstar Sufjan Stevens gets all sincere on 'Opie's Funeral Song.' The label's seven-year history has been filled with challenging, precious, alarming, sometimes awful music, and Mews Too: An Asthmatic Kitty Compilation is no exception. Fans of the Danielson Famile will find much to love here, but it would be a crime for the uninitiated not to give these colorful artists a peek as well. ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide |
