This classic album by the influential Clifford Brown/Max Roach group features Brown, Roach, ace tenorman Harold Land, pianist Richie Powell and bassist George Morrow. The date kicks off with Ray Noble's 'Cherokee', a fast-paced piece which demonstrates the group's agility. Soloing is remarkable; Land is particularly outstanding. 'Jacqui' is one of Powell's originals. Solos are typically excellent, highlighted by lyrical phrases by Brown, clever note choices by Land and melodic playing by Powell. Roach takes a solo before the group returns to the head. With a flourishing melody, 'Swingin', which clock in at 2: 50, displays Roach's advanced soloing techniques - his ability to create logical, melodic solos and develop concepts is most commendable. Lan d Brown and Powell take solos on the very cool 'Lands End' - a relaxed tune whic encourages bluesy licks. The highpoint of the recording is 'George's Dilemma' - stunning tune with a somewhat tense melody. The chorus splits between an afro-cuban section, and an evidently swung bridge. Solos - indescribable! 'Sandu' would have to be the bounciest track - a real blues. Land, whose roots were always firmly planted in blues, takes this piece in his stride, whipping up a deliciously cool solo. Brown, Roach a nd Powell are also fantastic. Brown uses a mute on the melody of 'Gerkin for Perkin' but lets his creamy tone ring out for his solo. Note the classic entering phrase by Land directly after the melody. The title suggests a slow ballad, but 'If I Love Ag ain' is fairly quick-paced. From the solo aspect: Brown and Land's solos are brilliant beyond compare. Their phrasing is magnificent. This track alone would score 10/10. 'Take the a Train' has a very clever introduction (I won't give it away, but I is on e of the best intros I've ever heard). This splendid rendition finds Land creating tension with his startling note choices, Brown dancing through the chord changes, and Powell's nimble fingers producing very melodic improvisation. The outro is just as wo nder. - Alex Fragapane, 11/23/2009, Australia Full title is: Study in Brown
