The ambience on this CD is remarkable. It was recorded in Bridges Auditorium in Claremont, California, and the result is an unusually intimate and warm timbre, well-suited to these works and this orchestra, and extremely pleasing to the ear. Bridges Auditorium was specially selected for its ambience - it is a large, warm, not echoing room with height, irregular surfaces, and lots of wood. The selections includes some of the most peaceful, serene, and melodic of Dvorak's works, the Notturno in B, Silent Woods, for cello and orchestra, and the Serenade for Strings, Op. 22. These works flow nicely together, and will appeal to even those who might have previously considered Dvorak's music too dry. The quality of the all-digital recording, the lush sound of the strings, and the warmth and immediacy of the auditorium combine to make this a singularly exceptional recording. This CD is recommended without reservation, a 10 in all aspects.
