These are amazing pieces. Tilson Thomas is THE conductor for Ives... He really seems to understand what this secret mind-blower was all about. Ives' music is STILL ahead of its time. Having the 1st and 4th Symphonies put together is a wonderful idea, because it slowly eases one's own mental state into the mind of Ives. The first is a bit like the 'New World', whereas the 4th is more like 'Another World Far Far Away'. Also, the 4th is sometimes conducted by two people... So Tilson Thomas should get an extra 'hand' for his efforts (sorry about the pun). The recordings are a bit muddy, and you lose some of the million layers, but when you have 47 melodies going on at once... it's hard to 'blend'. I wish they had gone just that extra mile in the mixing department, so this could have gotten a 10. - Tom Greene, 06/04/1998, USA Full title is: Ives: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 4/Hymns All Music Guide Title is: Ives, Mason, Webster and others SPARS: DDD Length: 77:09 Released: 1991 Booklet: 36 pages Booklet printed in the following languages: German, English, French, Italian Libretto printed in the following languages: German, English, French, Italian
